While Driftaway Café was founded in 2001 (a terrible year for all Americans), its founders and leaders are not new to the hospitality industry. Robyn Quattlebaum has been in this business since 1979 and has traveled all over the southeast, opening restaurants for corporate conglomerates such as Applebee’s and Bennigan’s as well as critically acclaimed local Savannah Restaurants. His wife Michele Quattlebaum has been in the business since 1988. Michele was raised in Salem, Ohio, spending her summers on an island off the east end of Grand Bahama, enjoying the fresh seafood and Caribbean flavors all too readily available. Michele’s family owned and operated a beautiful fishing resort known as Deep Water Cay. At one time Robyn owned seven restaurants with two partners. He was responsible for opening Huey’s on River Street in Savannah as well as several other restaurants in downtown Savannah. He and Michele had a chain of successful steakhouses in the early nineties name after Robyn’s son Austin. Together they opened Driftaway Café in the summer of 2001 in Sandfly, Georgia. Sandfly is one of the oldest communities in the country, dating back to the civil war when recently freed slaves from nearby Wormsloe Plantation established it. Today, Sandfly is a thriving community surrounded by beautiful waterfront homes and historic coastal islands. With help from family and friends with years of culinary experience, Driftaway Café has evolved into an establishment where people from all walks of life can feel comfortable grabbing a quick bite to eat or taking the time to relax and truly dine!
Driftaway Café was created out of the desire to serve the local neighborhoods of Savannah great food in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Established in 2001, Driftaway Café quickly became Savannah’s favorite spot to relax and enjoy good times with friends and family. Driftaway Café specializes in “casual coastal cuisine” with specialties like the sesame ginger tuna tartare on crispy wontons or the grilled local Mahi with fresh chimichurri . From the blackened grouper sandwich to shell’s turkey Reuben there is sure to be a sandwich to please everyone. The black and blue chicken salad or the jerked salmon and mango salsa on spring mixed lettuce are two more popular salad offerings. With fresh soup made from scratch daily to the very popular homemade crab stew you’ll want to try it all. Be sure to save room for one of our famous homemade desserts. Don’t forget to check out our weekend brunch menu with an assortment of tasty egg dishes, housemade corned beef hash and fresh baked biscuits. Driftaway Café also has live music three nights a week.
In addition to our ongoing philanthropic efforts, Driftaway Café donates to various charities and community groups each month.
